Skybound Services replace their IT systems with the PODFather Logistics system and ultra-rugged Intermec CN70 handhelds for transport management and electronic proof of delivery
Skybound Services are a specialist road haulage contractor operating close to Bristol Airport. Established in 1975, they have built an impressive client list of multi-national freight forwarders by operating a modern fleet of vehicles with all drivers CRB checked and trained to Aviation Security (AVSEC) Level D.
Following an extensive evaluation period of both software and hardware systems, Skybound have deployed the PODFather Logistics system – customised to suit their business processes – with ultra-rugged Intermec CN70 handhelds.
The previous systems used by Skybound served the office requirements well, but were limited and could not be easily adapted to support real-time Proof Of Delivery (POD) capture or offer customers online track-and-trace services.
The PODFather Logistics system includes a completely integrated, cloud-based platform for office staff, customers and drivers. The system integration facilities are also being offered to the larger customers of Skybound to directly link their freight systems into their PODFather account.
Neil Bayliss, General Manager of Skybound Services, explains, “We needed to upgrade our systems to keep up with our client’s expectations, it made sense to evaluate the PODFather as it's used by other hauliers and has EDI links with some of our existing customers.”
“We started the project by running the PODFather backoffice system in parallel with our old IT system and it quickly became the preferred booking and scheduling tool for the staff in the office. We took longer to decide which handhelds to roll out with our drivers as we needed to make sure that whatever was chosen was robust enough to perform in a 24/7 transport operation.”
Skybound have selected the Intermec CN70 handheld, an ultra-rugged mobile computer packed with all the data capture features they need to run the PODFather application. The CN70 features an IP67 environmental rating so can withstand submersion in water and high drops to concrete thanks to an all-weather VGA display with Gorilla Glass and near-indestructible keypad with all-weather backlight.
“The Intermec CN70 handhelds work well with the PODFather system”, continues Bayliss. “We can send electronic manifests to our drivers over GPRS and get real-time PODs back from them complete with customer names, signatures, photos, time and GPS coordinates. Having the PODs emailed immediately to our customers and linked directly into our accounts system is both a big improvement in our customer service levels, as well as a massive reduction in office administration”.
